Pattern Note

When I had an idea of a vest that can be worn as a main piece like a jacket, I immediately thought of a herringbone jacket. The herringbone pattern represents for me luxury and elegance, yet has vintage feel and goes well with mannish styling. The vest represents all these inspirations, in hand-knit! All edges have piping,-like clearness and the wide front overlap accentuates the jacket side of the vest.

Two major elements I paid particular attention to are the stitch pattern and sizing. Among the several herringbone stitches I know, I chose, after many trials, the one that creates a sturdy, plump fabric adapted to a jacket, though easy to work. The other point is that you can choose and combine two types of measurements – the total length and the body width. With 25 or more combinations (because further adjustment of the length is possible), you can obtain a size that perfectly fits your figure or match your style. You can choose small sizes for both, or choose only an over-sized body width to wear on your coats. With your preferred type of buttons in number you like, make your main piece jacket-vest.

Woven herringbone stitch used in CARTA uses a lot of slip stitch, which tends to pucker the fabric. The yarn you will affect largely the workability of the stitch. The pattern yarn Waltz is very elastic and easy to work with. It also has a good stitch definition, giving very even stitches, in short, a perfect yarn for CARTA! If you don’t use this yarn, I recommend yarn with same characteristics.

ジャケットのような位置付けで主役になれるベストを編みたい！と思いついた時に真っ先に連想したのがヘリンボーン織りのジャケットでした。私にとってヘリンボーン模様は、ラグジュアリーで品が良く、ヴィンテージらしさもあってメンズライクなスタイリングに似合う、という印象。それを手編みで表現したくなり、これらのインスピレーションを軸にデザインしました。端はパイピングのようにしっかりと際立たせ、前開きの重なりも深くしてジャケットのムードを盛り込んでいます。

工夫した大きなポイントはステッチとサイズ。私が知っている限りでもヘリンボーンのステッチはいくつかあり、しっかりハリのある編み地と簡単な手法でジャケットを実現できるよう、何度もトライして決定しました。もう一つは、着丈と身幅の2種類のサイズを組み合わせて選べる点。25通り+α (丈は調整可) のサイズがあるので体型にフィットさせやすく、より希望に沿ったサイズ感が叶います。例えば、両方コンパクトなサイズにしたり、コートの上から羽織れるよう身幅だけオーバーサイズを選択するのも素敵。ボタンの種類や数もお好みで、ぜひ主役級のジャケットベストを仕上げてみてください。

CARTAに使用しているヘリンボーンステッチはSlipステッチを多用しています。すべり目が多くなると引っ張られるので、糸によって編みやすさに大きく差が出てしまいます。指定糸の Waltz は、抜群に編みやすい弾力性を持ち、編み目が綺麗に揃いながら模様もくっきりと表現できる、CARTAパターンに最適な糸です。もし指定糸以外で編まれる場合は、それらを参考に同じような特性がある糸をおすすめします。
