Carthen Shawl
The Carthen Shawl Pattern Details:
A while back a sweet friend of mine sent me a remnant from an antique Welsh woven blanket. I was instantly taken in with the design and started exploring ways to carry the gorgeous motifs into knitted stitches.
As these blankets, or Carthen, are woven I wanted to use a stitch that looked as close to weaving as possible, and I think that roositud turned out to be perfect for the job. So here it is, a cozy shawl/wrap/blanket inspired by Welsh weaving.
It’s knitted in DK weight yarn on size US 7/3.75 mm needles.
The construction is sideways, and features a roositud motif that repeats three times, with sections of wide garter rib stitches between.
The tails from the roositud yarns are tied, knotted, and trimmed even, instead of weaving them in, to create small areas of interest with fringe similar to the edge of a woven blanket.
The yarn I used for my sample is Nature Spun DK. I used 3 skeins for the MC and one for the CC.
