The Casla Hat is filled with intersecting cables is named for the small village of Casla in County Galway, Ireland not far from the Atlantic coast. The rustic, rocky shore of this part of Ireland inspired all of the intertwining paths in this engaging, heavily-cabled hat.

The Casla Hat—with both written and charted directions—is exciting from the first stitch until the last. It is written in one size to be knit in worsted weight yarn for a classic and wearable finished object. It’s suitable for an intermediate knitter but interesting enough for a more advanced one.

Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm), 16” (40 cm) circular needles or needles needed to get gauge. US 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles for crown decreases.

Yarn Used: Universal Yarn, Deluxe Worsted, Worsted weight, 1 skein 100% wool; 220 yards (200 m)/100 grams or any worsted weight yarn of your choosing.

Sample is knit as Beanie in Natural, approx. 165 yds (151 m)

Gauge: 28 stitches/28 rounds = 4” (10 cm) square in body texture using larger needles. 23-st pretzel cable at widest part = 3.5” (8.9 cm) at center

Note: Gauge in stockinette was 18 stitches/24 rounds = 4” (10 cm) square

Other Notions: Cable needle, darning needle, stitch markers.

Special Techniques: Cables, cast on & bind off, charts (written directions available), decreases.

Sizes: Beanie (Slouchy), both to fit average adult head sizes 20-24“ (51-61 cm) head circumference.
