The Castlebar Shawl is named after Castlebar, a town in County Mayo, Ireland. The texture in the body of this shawl reminds me of the rocky beaches and stone walls near Castlebar. Each stone has its own beauty but when viewed from farther away they give this lovely feeling of texture and interest.

Similarly this shawl is filled with texture and cables and has rhythmic, mirrored 2-stitch cables with a striking center braided cable. I have included step-by-step instructions to complete the 2-stitch cables without a cable needle. And if you are feeling brave, there is a link to a tutorial I like for doing larger cables without a cable needle! I prefer the safety of a cable needle for those larger cables, but you choose what works for you.

This worsted-weight, textured triangle-shaped shawl—with both written and charted directions—is perfect for an intermediate knitter but interesting enough for an advanced one.

Written in one size with notes on how to adjust it smaller or larger based on your needs. The Castlebar Shawl has so many possibilities for styling. This timeless design is very wearable either around the shoulders traditionally or worn around the neck like a scarf.

Needle:
US 9 (5.5 mm), 40” (100 cm) circular needle or needles needed to get gauge

Note: I suggest pointier tipped needles versus blunter ones for this pattern.

Suggested Yarn:
Universal Yarn, Deluxe Worsted, Worsted, 4 skeins 100% Wool; 220 yds (200 m)/100 g or any worsted weight yarn of your choosing.

Sample uses: Musket, approx. 850 yds (777 m)

Gauge: 18 stitches/26 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in texture from Body Section using US 9 (5.5 mm) needles or whatever size needle gives you the fabric you would like.

Other Notions: 4 stitch markers for edges and center stitches, stitch markers for texture (optional but suggested to make things easier), darning needle

Special Techniques:
Knit, purl, cables, charts (written directions available), increases (m1r, m1l), cast on & bind off.
