Cat Nouveau Mitts
Cat Nouveau sprouted from my love of Art Deco and was spurred on by the iconic “Le Chat Noir” poster. Also, sometimes you just need everyone to know that you adore black cats and being comfy. I couldn’t resist turning the cowl version of this pattern into complementary handwarmers. These stranded knit mitts were designed to keep you warm while also displaying a piece of hand-knit art on your hands.

With Le Chat Noir style cats on the backs of the hands, an Art Deco inspired motif on the palm, and a complementary accent on the wrist, the Cat Nouveau Mitts are worked in the round with stranded knitting, using either long circular needles to work in Magic Loop or DPNs. This pattern is recommended for knitters who have experience with stranded colorwork, knitting in the round, and reading charts.
Yarn
Three skeins of Lattes & Llamas Interlude Yarn (100 grams/ 438 yards) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in three contrasting colorways.
Sample is shown in ‘Stars Hollow’ as Color A, ‘Miss Patty’ as Color B, and ‘In Omnia Paratus’ as Color C.
Color A: 25 grams/ 110 yards
Color B: 20 grams/ 88 yards
Color C: 20 grams/ 88 yards
When choosing your yarn, make sure that Colors B and C contrast strongly with Color A. I recommend taking a photograph of the yarns together, and then changing it into black and white to see if the colors contrast strongly enough.
Needles
US1 / 2.25 mm to work in Magic Loop or size needed to obtain gauge.
I prefer the Magic Loop method when knitting mitts. If you are more comfortable using DPNs or two circulars, this pattern is easily converted.
Gauge
32 sts and 38 rnds = 4” in stranded colorwork, knit in the round and blocked.
Adjusting the gauge listed above or the pattern will alter the size of your mitts and change the yardage requirements.
Finished Size
One Size: 9.25 inches long and 8 inches in circumference after blocking.
Instructions are included to modify the size of your mitts by going up or down a needle size.
