According to Mr. Webster, a catenary curve is assumed by a cord of uniform density and cross section that is perfectly flexible but not capable of being stretched and that hangs freely from two fixed points. My friend and amazing test-knitter Bonnie provided me with this term as I was trying to describe the aspect of this shawl that I found so appealing…a cathedralesque arch that shapes and gives a visual context for the openwork edging. This shawl was designed to give hand painted semi-solid yarns the opportunity to display their beauty.

Please note that the decrease symbol is for a k2tog, as shown in the key to the chart. I happened to choose the slash commonly used for a ssk, but in this chart, it indicates a k2tog.
