My daughter came up with an idea 3 years ago and I finally got a chance to create it.

Introducing the “Caterpillar Metamorphable”, a caterpillar and butterfly reversible toy.

The Caterpillar Metamorphable is unique compared to other reversible toys out there. Both the caterpillar and butterfly can be closed fully. The caterpillar also has a special closure for the belly. The butterfly was made to be more realistic (having legs etc.)

This fun and unique reversible toy can also be used as an educational toy. Great for the classroom as a teaching aid. There are 3 options for closing the butterfly body.

The pattern uses Caron Simply Soft yarn and an E (3.50 MM) hook. Other worsted weight yarns and size of hooks will change the size of the caterpillar and butterfly.

Other materials needed:

Small amount of stuffing/Poly-fil - for the caterpillar legs
4 small buttons (approx. 1/2 inch wide) - for the butterfly enclosure

Optional - Velcro and Snap on buttons (for the butterfly enclosure). Instructions are included in the pattern for these options.

This pattern is at an Intermediate skill level. However, there are a lot of pictures to help with the butterfly wings, the caterpillar belly area and also help to join the two together, which can help make it easier for other skill levels make this reversible.

Many pictures are included in the pattern to help with sewing the wings together and onto the butterfly body, and to help with sewing the caterpillar and butterfly together to make it reversible.
