Cathedral Diamonds Icelandic Hat
Soft and fuzzy and oh-so warm, these beautiful hats will keep the whole family toasty during the cold months. The hat features a diamond rosette pattern that evokes the stained glass panes of a cathedral window. Less than a ball of each color is required, and these hats are a great way to use up leftover yarn from an Icelandic sweater project. This pattern is designed for Alafoss Lopi (Icelandic wool), but any bulky yarn can be substituted. You might want to try Knit Picks Wonderfluff or Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Bulky as a cozy alternative.
This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The diamond design is knitted using the stranded knitting technique. The bulky yarn makes this a very quick knit.
This pattern includes five sizes: baby (16” head circumference), toddler (17.5” head circumference), child (19” head circumference), adult small/medium (21” head circumference), adult medium (23” head circumference).
The gauge is 13 stitches and 17 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch.
This pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters. You must be able to follow a color chart, and work in stranded knitting carrying three colors.
For the hat in pinks, I used Alafoss Lopi, a bulky weight Icelandic wool (100% wool, 109 yds per ball). You will need 1 ball each of Dark Magenta (#1240), Fuchsia Heather (#9969), Winter Morning (#1239). You may substitute any bulky weight yarn for this pattern. You will also need 16” circular needles and double pointed needles in size US 10 or whatever size necessary to get the gauge, and 16” needles one size larger for the stranded knitting section.
This pattern includes written instructions, a full-color chart, and notes on the stranded knitting technique.
