Cecil Shawl

Cecil is named after my father, whose first name is Cecil but who everyone calls Tony, shortening his middle name. It is a large crescent shawl knit tip to tip avoiding rows with lots of stitches. Mohair is combined with a fingering weight yarn to create different abstract shapes throughout the shawl which look great when worn wrapped around your neck or flat over your shoulders. For the sample I used a muted palette but really the skies the limit. I would recommend using a solid or tonal yarn for the fingering weight yarn so that the changes in the mohair really show.

Information:
Yarn: 3 x 100g(1200m) fingering weight and 3 x contrast colours 50g (400m) kid silk mohair each.

My test knitters used varying amounts of yarn, probably due to getting consistent gauge over the garter stitch so I haven’t given exact yarn amounts. The amounts given above will mean you can definitely complete the project with yarn to spare.

Sample was knit using undyed Cormo silk from Witch Crafty Lady and kid silk mohair – light blue is Beautiful Knitters Chelsea in the colour Wolf; grey is Drops Kid Silk Mohair in the colour Ash Grey; mustard is Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair in the colour Dark Mustard

Needles: US 5/3.75mm or needles required to get gauge
Gauge: 25 sts x 35 rows to 10cm/4” over garter stitch pattern blocked
Measurements: 216 cm/85” wingspan, 40 cm/16” depth

The pattern for the shawl shape is written and charted. The colour placement is only charted but straightforward with several similar rows to create the abstract shapes. It is not an intarsia technique as the yarns do not need to be wrapped around each other. The mohair is held with the main yarn and picked up and dropped as required.
