This headband is triple-thick, because the outside is stranded and it has a liner, giving you three layers of fabric to keep those chilly winds from cutting through.

Knit seamlessly in the round, you’ll start the liner at the center of its height with a provisional cast on, knit the entire piece, and graft the start to the finish for a headband that is smooth to look at and to wear. If wool bothers your skin, choose a super soft merino, silk, or cashmere blend for the liner, as long as it’s DK weight. Great for using up scraps!

Skills needed:
Stranded knitting with two colors, following a chart (two kinds provided!), provisional cast on, picot edging (yo, k2tog), weaving in ends, grafting, blocking.

Size:
About 22” around, 4” tall, unstretched. This headband can be easily blocked to fit a variety of adult head sizes. For a smaller headband, use sport weight yarn instead of DK. For a larger head, block to size.

Materials:
-DK weight yarn in two or more colors, approximately 52g in total. (I used Green Mountain Spinnery’s Alpaca Elegance, except for the liner of sample #2, which is Fiberseed’s Sprout DK)
-a 16” circular needle in the size you need to obtain gauge (I used a US 4)
-optional: a second 16” circular in a similar size or smaller for kitchener stitch, if that is your preferred grafting method.
-length of smooth scrap yarn for provisional cast on

Gauge:
5.5 to 6 sts/inch in colorwork. Headband is stretchy. My two samples with the same yarn had slightly different gauges and both fit great.
