Cellular Automata Cowl
Cellular Automata colorwork cowl is a snuggly 2-strand colorwork cowl worked in the round, with no seams. It is one of my first patterns in an ongoing series of knitting patterns integrating algorithmic computing and digital aesthetics with knitwear design, which I call Algorithmic Knitting Design. The patterns being developed under this project implement mainly standard, even basic techniques, but challenge the knitter with large, complex and non-repeating patterns. As knitters, I think it’s interesting to re-consider and recontextualize our own craft and unique skill sets. The project strives to approach knitting as a form of applied science and mathematics, and takes advantage of your wonderful skills as a knitter, whether a beginner, intermediate, or master knitter. <3
Size: One size fits most
Gauge:
13sts x 16 rows = 10cm/4” in colorwork pattern on larger needles.
Gauge is not critical in this project - deviations are possible, although a gauge of more than 15 stitches per 10x10cm is not recommended as it will make the cowl quite tight around the neck. Similarly, a row gauge of less than 15 rows per 10x10cm will result in an excessively long cowl, unless stitch gauge is similarly low resulting in a wider cowl that can accommodate the additional length.
Materials:
Any bulky weight yarn or DK weight yarn held double that makes gauge, or thicker yarn, for a wider and longer cowl; 2 colors.
Sample was knit with Ice Yarns Merino Comfort Light held double for main color, and Alison & Mae Pure Wool aran weight yarn for contrast color.
Approx. 220m/240yds of main color, 170m/185yds of contrast color, based on recommended gauge
Needles
6mm / US 10 / UK 4 40-60cm/16-24” circular needles
8mm / US 11 40-60cm/16-24” circular needles (or size to obtain colorwork gauge)
Materials
Stitch markers or waste yarn, row counter (optional), tapestry needle, tape measure
