Celtic Cable Knotted Braid Blanket
The Celtic Cable Knotted Braid blanket is a mixed pattern of cables of different sizes with a centre pattern of an impressive 8-strand braid with a whopping 42-row repeat. Celtic braids are a common feature and centrepiece of Irish Aran knitting. Irish Aran knitting patterns have a long and rich history, originating in the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Most commonly seen in sweaters, I have replicated those patterns here in blanket form.
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.
SUGGESTED TOOLS: No needles required (finger knitting). Scissors.
MATERIALS & MEASUREMENTS:
- 5 balls of Bernat Alize Blanket-EZ Yarn (6.4oz, 180g) (Image shown is the colour ‘Bright Purple’). Approximate size 44” x 50” (129.5 x 127cm)
-OR-
- 9 balls of Lion Brand Off-the-Hook (3.5 oz/100g (Image shown is the colour ‘Beach Sand’). Approximate size 42” x 44” (109cm x 129.5cm)
PLEASE NOTE: This pattern will work with any brand of loop yarn, but keep in mind that the size of the loops, and size of the balls/skeins of each brand is different.
For smaller loop yarns like Red Heart Loop-It, the number of balls required should be similar to Lion Brand Off-the-Hook, as long as the balls are of a similar size. Alize Puffy Fine (European) yarn will work with this pattern but you will need to determine the quantity needed by comparing the number of yards in your balls.
