Chair 6 Cowl
Some time ago, at Alyeska Ski Resort, they took the “bubbles” off of Chair 6. For those of you in the know, you know what I mean when I say, they are really missed! When the wind is blasting snow pellets into your face, and the temperature is dropping as you ride up Chair 6 at Alyeska, you need something really warm to cover your nose and cheeks. Create your own little bubble of warmth and protection with this easy, quick to knit, face and neck warmer.
Curving lines bring to mind ski tracks. The bulky single ply yarn makes a garment with structure that stays in place over your cheeks holding out the weather; the ribbing at the top prevents curling and allows for expansion over the lower face; the Merino wool means it is soft against your skin, and warm even when wet from melted snow (and lets be real, exhaled moisture from working hard skiing all that powder!)
Materials/Notes:
Yarn: Malabrigo Rasta Super Chunky Kettle Dyed Pure Merino Wool Yarn, 150gr/5.25oz, 90 yards, Color Whale’s Road/247, one skein (pattern uses almost entire skein).
Gauge: approximately 12 st x 14 rows = 4 inches in 1x1 ribbing stitch; one pattern repeat (9 st) is about 3 ¼ to 3 1/2 inches knitting in the round. Take time to check your gauge.
Needles: Size 10 US (6.0 mm), 16” circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain needed gauge).
Finished Size (blocked): Approximately 18” top circumference; 24” bottom circumference; Height from top to bottom edge 9 1/2”.
Note: The body pattern is knit in the round from the bottom up and finished with a ribbed edge. Size can be adjusted by adding a repeat, changing your needles, changing your yarn, or all three; obtain enough yarn to complete your project. Have fun!
