El chaleco Alcatraz estará disponible el 4 de abril.
Alcatraz, o La Roca, fue una prisión federal de máxima seguridad construida en la Isla de Alcatraz, a poco más de 3 km de la costa de San Francisco, y que alojó a los peores criminales de la época entre 1934 y 1963, año en el que sus puertas cerraron definitivamente. Hoy en día es un museo que nos hace reflexionar sobre la importancia de los derechos humanos y de la reinserción social.
El chaleco Alcatraz se construye de arriba abajo, comenzando por la espalda, para después montar los puntos en los hombros y construir el delantero, uniendo ambas piezas para tejer el cuerpo en circular, y dibujando unas celdas con la técnica de colorwork que asemejan las formas que la luz de la prisión dibuja en las paredes.
Técnicas utilizadas
Para poder tejer el chaleco tendrás que saber tejer punto derecho, punto revés, hacer aumentos, montar puntos y cerrarlos, dejar puntos en espera y saber recuperarlos, levantar puntos y trabajar con varias hebras a la vez utilizando la técnica de stranded colorwork.
Agujas recomendadas
Agujas de 3’5 mm (US 4) y de 4 mm (US 6) con un cable de, al menos, 80 cm para trabajar el cuerpo, y cable de 40 cm para trabajar los elásticos del cuello y las sisas o agujas de doble punta si esa es tu elección. Puedes utilizar el número de aguja que necesites para ajustar tu tensión.
Lana
Lana grosor fingering/ heavy fingering (100 gr, 400/ 360 m), en dos colores. Yo he utilizado, para el color principal, lana de Lana al Pascolo, en su calidad Bas (70% pura lana, 15% alpaca y 15% seda; 180 m en 50 gr) en color verde, y para el color de contraste, lana de Uy yarn en su calidad merino fingering (400 m en 100 gr) en color Aguamarina. La cantidad de lana que utilizarás variará en función de la talla elegida y del largo del cuerpo, por lo que las siguientes cantidades son aproximadas:
CP: 3 (3, 4, 4, 5) (5, 6, 6, 7) madejas de 50 gr.
CC: 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 2, 2) madejas de 50 gr.
Muestra de tensión
20 pt x 29 vtas en un cuadrado de 10cm x 10cm, tejido en plano con el color principal y agujas de 4 mm, en punto derecho, después del bloqueo.
Tallas
1, (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9). El chaleco Alcatraz está diseñado para tener una holgura positiva de entre 5 y 10 cm, lo que significa que medirá entre 5 y 10 cm más, en redondo, que lo que mide tu contorno de pecho. Antes de comenzar a tejer, asegúrate de medir tu contorno de pecho, por la parte más sobresaliente del mismo y a pulmón lleno, para determinar qué talla se ajusta mejor a tu cuerpo. Por ejemplo, si tu contorno de pecho mide 86 cm, deberías tejer la talla 1. La talla 1 tiene un contorno de pecho de 92 cm, lo que te daría una holgura positiva de 6 cm. De ti dependerá elegir una talla con más o menos holgura.

Alcatraz, or The Rock, was a maximum security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, 1.25 miles off the coast of San Francisco. The island became adapted and used as a prison in August 1934 after the buildings were modernized and security increased. It housed the most notorious criminals of the time between 1934 and 1963, the year its doors were permanently closed. Today, it is a museum that makes us reflect on the importance of Human Rights and social reintegration.
The Alcatraz vest is knitted from the top down, started knitting the back and then picking up the stitches on the shoulders to knit the front. After this, you will join the front and the back to start knitting the body in the round. At the bottom of the body you will “draw” several cells using stranded colorwork that resembles the shapes that the sun draws on the walls of the prison.
Skills required
Pattern requires the following skills: knit, purl, increasing, pick up stitches, cast on and bind off stitches, leave stitches on hold using scrap yarn or a stitch holder, and knit with two strands of yarn at the same time using stranded colorwork.
Recommended needle size
US 4 (3’5 mm) and US 6 (4 mm) circular needles, either 80 cm long to knit the body in the round, and either 40 cm long to knit the armholes and neck ribbings, or DPN’s if that is your choice. You can use another needle size to obtain gauge.
Yarn
Fingering/ heavy fingering weight yarn (400/ 360 m in 100 gr) in two colors. I have used, for MC, yarn from Lana al Pascolo in its quality Bas (70% pure wool, 15% alpaca, 15% silk, 180m in 50 gr), in color green and, for CC, yarn from Uy yarns, in its quality Merino fingering (400m in 100 gr) in color Aguamarina. The amount of yarn you will use will depend on the size chosen and the length of the body. Please note that the following amounts of yarn are approximate:
MC: 3 (3, 4, 4, 5) (5, 6, 6, 7) skeins of 50 gr.
CC: 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 2, 2) skeins of 50 gr.
Gauge
20 stitches and 29 rows using MC in stockinette stitch over 4 inches (10 centimeters), on US 6 (4 mm) needles, knitting flat, after blocking.
Sizes
1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9). The Alcatraz vest is designed to have between 2 and 4 inches (5 - 10 cm) of positive ease, meaning it is designed to be between two and four inches (5 - 10 cm) larger in circumference than your bust measurement. Before starting your vest, be sure to measure yourself your bust circumference, at the most prominent part of it and with a full breath, to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if your bust circumference measures 33 ¾ inches (86 cm), you should knit a size 1. A size 1 vest has a bust circumference of 36 ¼ inches (92 cm), which gives you a 2 ¼ inches (6 cm) of positive ease. It will be up to you to choose a size with more positive or less positive ease.
