Charlie Square is written as a small throw; switch it up with lighter yarn at the same gauge to make a square shawl/wrap.

This is the squarish version of the triangular Charlie shawl!

This blanket features textured lace and ribbing, using similar stitch motifs to the Charlie shawl. Knit it in worsted weight for a throw blanket, or knit it in lighter yarn for a big square shawl.

There’s no provisional cast-on for this one, but the picked-up stitches in this design are a little fiddly. They’re worked in a way that creates a faux seam around the central square. You can omit this detail and pick up the same number of stitches in a more conventional way if you prefer, but I think the odd detail is worth it.

Gauge:
For convenience, gauge is taken from the first section of the project. Gauge is 15 sts and 36 rows over 4”/10cm in blocked garter stitch, worked flat.

Materials:

  • About 1060 yards of worsted-weight yarn, which breaks down to 6 skeins of Malabrigo Rios, or two balls of Caron Cotton Cakes (sample shown in Country Romance and Coral, using one of each).
  • One long 40”+ flexible circular needle in US7-8/4.5-5.0mm, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • OPTIONAL: a 16” circular needle in the size you need for gauge can be used to start the pattern, if preferred.

Measurements:
As shown, this is a small blanket, about 42”/106cm along each side.
