Many indie dyers are offering 100% silk laceweight yarn these days. Silk takes dye wonderfully and has great shine, so single skeins are easy to fall in love with and to buy. However, sometimes it’s not so easy to find a pattern that will complement a special skein of hand-dyed silk. It’s worth the effort, though, because silk is a wonderful fiber for summer or special occasions: the fabric has beautiful drape and breathes well.

Here is a geometric lace scarf that was designed to use a single kettle-dyed skein of heavy laceweight bombyx silk. The construction, with garter stitch selvedge sides and knitted on garter lace borders, minimizes cast-ons and cast-offs that can be inflexible during blocking, and also limits the number of loose ends to hide at the end (these can be difficult to manage with silk yarn).

This pattern is suitable for an adventurous newcomer to lace. For the body of the scarf, all wrong side rows are plain. You will need to follow the chart, but there are no difficult techniques other than different types of double decreases.
