Slip Stitch inserts that looks like railroad tracks are what distinguishes the Chattanooga Shawlette as a unique pattern. I thought of the old Big Band song performed by Glenn Miller in the 1940s called “Chattanooga Choo Choo” as I was knitting this shawlette, and came up with its name. It is an asymmetrical piece knit on the bias from the bottom up, starting with the Crown of Glory Lace which features large triple yarn over holes that look like the wheels on a train. The slip stitch pattern is an easy 2 color play done in Star Tweed Stitch both directly above the bottom border, and also just before binding off at the top. German Short Rows are utilized to achieve the shape. If you have never worked with German Short Rows, you can also use any other wrap and turn you are comfortable with, although easy to follow directions are included for the Double Stitch used in German Short Rows. This shawlette is designed for and works best in worsted weight yarn, and I used a total of 550 yards of yarn divided equally between the 2 colors. It is 6 feet in length, and 21 inches at its widest, deepest point. It knits up very quickly because the largest sections are done in garter stitch. Written directions and a few video help links are included in the pattern. Charts are not included since the written directions are simple and easy to follow.
