ABOUT
The Chatterley Cardigan takes its name from Lady Chatterley’s Lover, a classic novel written by D.H. Lawrence, set on an aristocratic estate in 1920s England. This design reimagines a garment popular during this era, known as a bed jacket, often rendered in luxurious silk and lace and layered over nightgowns.
The pattern is knit top-down, beginning with the back piece. Two front pieces are picked up and knit flat, one at a time. Once both front pieces have reached the underarm level, all three pieces are joined and knit flat. A lace hem detail is then worked using a contrast colored yarn. Set-in sleeves are added afterward, then finished with an adapted lace detail in the contrasting
yarn. A lace edging is then worked back and forth across the back of the neck, from which two additional lace edges will be worked vertically down both front sides of the cardigan. Finish it off with two sets of lace ties, and voila, your Chatterley Cardigan will be ready to wear!
