Chaya Hat
Chaya is a Kankana-ey word that simply means North. Sometimes it also refers to Heaven.
This hat is a 2 Colour stranded colourwork hat in fingering weight yarn meant to be a skull cap but may be modified to be a slouchy hat. Modification guides are also available for Sport weight and Dk weight yarns.
Sometimes patterns and motifs come about by playing with yarn. I’ve recently been binge watching the Outlander Series so maybe it was influenced by that. Coincidentally, I’ve also been extensively researching about the “Pinilian” weaving of the Ilocos Region in the Northern Philippines, and perhaps it was influenced by that too! Its amazing how sometimes our imagination melds different ideas together to form something that resembles many things so much so that it becomes another thing entirely, So while this motif resembles various motifs it isn’t a traditional motif in itself. For me it feels generally like a northern Philippine motif. And because outlander has been a recent obsession , there’s an overwhelmingly northern theme going on.
