CHD Awareness Scarf
All proceeds for the CHD Awareness Scarf will be donated to the Adult Congenital Heart Association whose mission is to improve and extend the lives of the millions of people born with congenital heart defects through education, advocacy and research.
-CHD stands for Congenital Heart Defect
-A CHD is a structural deformity in the heart present at birth
-1 in 100 babies are born with a CHD
-25% of babies born with CHD require surgery or other interventions in their first year of life
-There is no cure
-CHD’s are 50x more common than childhood cancer but receive about a fifth of the funding
-People with CHD’s require lifelong specialized care
This scarf is designed to look like the CHD awareness ribbon with its half blue and half red color blocking. The pattern features ten cartoon hearts in a knit and purl stitch pattern along with a three-stitch garter selvedge. Half of the hearts are knit right side up and the other half upside down so that they all appear right side up when the scarf is worn.
Yarn used:
- Loops and Threads Impeccable in Red Hot and Clear Blue
Other Suggested Yarn:
- Knit Picks Swish Worsted in Serrano and Gulf Stream
- Cascade 220 Superwash in Cobalt Heather and Really Red
- Any worsted weight yarn of your choice :) 130 yards in each color
This is a one size scarf, but you can easily make it longer or shorter by adding or subtracting repeats, or make it wider or narrower by using a different weight yarn and adjusting your gauge. The pattern is written in worsted weight but you are welcome to do what works for you and your vision.
If you are a CHD survivor yourself or have a heart warrior you want to celebrate AND you are a knitter, this pattern is for you! If you just like hearts and knitting but don’t have a connection to CHD, that’s ok too! Thank you for supporting my work and this cause. I hope you enjoy the pattern.
