Cheating at checkers when you’re playing - that’s naughty.
Cheating at checkers when you’re knitting - that’s just clever.
There are several types of cheating going on here.

It looks stranded, but you only knit with one colour at a time (and slip the other) which makes it very relaxing to work

The bottom edge looks a bit like I-cord, but it’s done with a crochet hook and is quick and easy

The cowl looks shaped, but it’s not - the shape just comes from the construction.

And the subtle shading comes from a self-striping yarn.
The pattern could also be used to use up leftovers - as it’s double thickness you wouldn’t need to weave in all the ends.
