Checkerboard Cable Blanket
The Checkerboard Cable Blanket is an Irish Aran/Celtic-inspired design consisting of a centre pattern of alternating squares (checkerboard), flanked by chunky chain cables, bordered by panels of seed stitch. This design is inspired by medieval knights - the seed stitch and chain cables recall chain mail armour, and the checkerboard pattern represents a common motif of shields and standards of the time.
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.
SUGGESTED MATERIALS: 5 balls of Bernat Alize Blanket-EZ Yarn (6.4oz, 180g) (Image shown is the colour ‘Dark Gray’).
SUGGESTED TOOLS: No needles required (finger knitting). Scissors.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Approx. 42” by 52” (106.5 cm by 132 cm).
PLEASE NOTE: This pattern will work with any brand of loop yarn, but keep in mind that the size of the loops, and size of the balls/skeins of each brand is different.
Lion Brand Off-The-Hook, Lion Brand Crayola Off-The-Hook, Red Heart Loop-It, and Alize Puffy (European) yarns can all be used with this pattern, but will yield a blanket with smaller overall dimensions. You will also need more balls/skeins to complete the pattern as is.
