Checkerboard Hat
For years, I’ve been teaching people to knit using this pattern because who wants to start knitting with a rectangle scarf? Since this hat is knit in the round, only the knit stitch is used. Simple colorwork and creatively selected colors make this cheerful hat with jaunty tassels an engaging first project.
A note about sizing and yarn
The Newborn and Baby sizes are knit with a DK weight yarn in a gauge of 20 sts to 4”. Suggested yarns include Tahki Cotton Classic and Tanis Fiber Arts Purewash DK.
The Toddler size is knit with a worsted weight yarn in a gauge of 16 sts to 4”. Suggested yarns include Spud & Chloe Sweater and Malabrigo Worsted.
Tips for stranded knitting in the round are provided as well as a photo tutorial for creating tassels.
