On a recent cruise up the coast of New England and the Canadian Maritime provinces, I was struck by the abundance of beautiful handmade mittens and hats for sale. Upon returning home, I wanted to knit some traditional mittens for myself and found Robin Hansen’s Incredible Checkerboard Mittens in her book “Favorite Mittens.”

I was very pleased with these mittens and decided to make a hat to match and this pattern is the happy result.

December 15, 2024: I have now updated the pattern to include two sizes: Small/Medium and Large/XL. Length can be easily added to either but because of how the top decreases work, I do not recommend attempting to resize the width.

All efforts were made to make this pattern error-free. It is intended for individual home use only and not to be reproduced or reknit for profit.
