Checkmate Vest
The Checkmate Vest is BY RED BEAN (aka Ella)’s first written pattern (and the most requested one) since she first joined the crochet community on Instagram. It can be worn fitted or oversized but is meant to be slightly oversized and cropped in length.
Would look equally cute alone or worn over something (a dress, a tee, a button-down, etc.). The Checkmate Vest is meant to be a versatile piece you’ll be regularly reaching for when you feel like you have nothing to wear. ♡
Level of difficulty: Beginner to advanced beginner. It is possible for a complete beginner to read this pattern. However, it is recommended that you first go on YouTube and familiarize yourself with basic crochet terminology before making this vest.
Materials:
- Worsted/medium (size 4) weight yarn. For reference, I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn in the colors mod green and jute. I used ~4.5 balls of yarn (2 jute & 2.5 mod green) for a size M.
- 4mm crochet hook (or any hook that meets the gauge with your tension; gauge is provided within the pattern)
- Measuring tool (e.g., ruler, tape measurer)
- Scissors & yarn needle
Bust measurement (full measurements given within pattern; cm measurements are approximate):
- XS: 30” (76cm)
- S: 35” (89cm)
- M: 40” (102cm)
- L: 45” (114cm)
- XL: 50” (127 cm)
Size customizations are provided in the pattern. Tester photos are not available for size xlrg because testers were not able to finish testing.

This document is for personal use only. Please do not sell, copy, or distribute this document or any of its parts. Commercial use of this document or any of its parts (e.g., recording a YouTube video based on or inspired by this vest) is prohibited.
You may sell garments made from this pattern. However, you must credit me by either tagging @redbean.crochet via Instagram or linking my website redbeandreamshop.com. Please do not undersell yourself. At the very least, charge minimum wage x hours worked on vest + cost of materials. I find it a disservice to yourself if you choose to underpay yourself. When selling the vest, use your own photos. Using mine or any of my tester’s photos is prohibited.
When posting a photo of a vest made from this pattern, please tag me on Instagram @redbean.crochet and/or use #checkmatevest #redbeancrochet. Why, you might ask?
I would love to share your work on my page as it brings me insurmountable joy that someone has made a vest using this pattern. ♡
It is only fair that credit goes where credit is due. This is not gatekeeping. It is respecting and recognizing the work a creative has put into creating a pattern. Because you have bought this pattern does not make it yours nor does it mean you should treat the design as if it is yours.
Acknowledgments:
Thank you to ig @elliestrahan & @casualhurricane for naming this vest!
