My mum used to work for a fashion designer making knitwear, so she knits me lots of chunky scarves, hats and gloves, which I love. -Katie McGrath, Irish actress

I’ve wanted to design a chunky cowl and hat combo for a while, I think knitting with chunky yarn can make a quick and easy knit for a gift for a friend or family member. This cowl works up in an evening or two and turns out lovely. The chunky yarn allows a bit of body so that it doesn’t slouch down around your chest and provides a little bit of warmth sort of like a turtleneck without the restriction. The cowl is knit flat and grafted upon completion, as is the band of the hat and stitches are picked up around one side to close the top.

Adding additional repeats will allow for a longer cowl.

There is a coordinating hat pattern for this cowl here: HAT

PRINTING NOTE: This is a checklist pattern; it is not necessary to print the entire pattern if you prefer not to use the checkboxes for each section.

The cowl includes a provisional cast on, C12F (cable 12 front) stitches and kitchener stitch.

SAMPLE: The original cowl sample was knit using Chelsea Luxe Yarns Chunky (100% SW merino 106 yds/100 g) and weighed 136 grams using 145 yards/132 meters.
