Chelsea Girl Shawl has texture, stripes of three colors, and a picot edging for an overall edgy but feminine look. Knit in light-worsted-weight yarn, this is a fairly quick knit (except for the picot edging, which takes as long as any picot edging will), and is a great layering piece to ward off a bit of chill on the shoulders or to wear draped around your neck as a neck wrap. Named after my old neighborhood in Manhattan, the eyelet and stripes would be equally at home on a country mouse or a city mouse.

Construction: This shawl uses a garter tab cast-on and is then worked down and out from the top center, with a spine of stitches that runs down the center. The main eyelet stitches are created with yarn overs, and the eyelet sections alternate with stockinette sections. Three colors of yarn are used (a one-color variation is provided) in color-block sections plus alternate in a striped section. A special eyelet section and picot edging finish off the bottom edge.

Finished Size: One size of 56 inches (142 cm) wingspan / 27 inches (68 cm) spine length, but depending on the yarn you use and its stretchiness, the wingspan may be slightly smaller or larger.

Yarn Requirements (samples shown, top to bottom, use the following):

• (teal version) (A) Tosh Vintage in “one of a kind” (a deep solid teal; Malabrigo Rios in “Teal Feather” would be a good substitute, or Tosh Vintage in “Shire” would work for a greener look but still lovely; a deep blue, perhaps even Tosh Vintage in “Arctic,” would work); (B) Tosh Vintage in “Esoteric”; (C) Manos del Uruguay Maxima in “Eucalyptus.”

• (black and vermillion version) Tosh Vintage in one of each color: (A) “Dirty Panther”; (B) “Vermillion”; (C) “Vintage Sari.”

• (gold, ivory, blue version) Tosh Vintage in one of each color: (A) “Candlewick”; (B) “Arctic”; (C) “Antler.”

• (one-color black-and-white speckles version) I used 2.5 skeins of Lorna’s Laces in a special “Newsprint” color, dyed for the Yarn Co. store. Limited skeins are available online at http://www.theyarnco.com (see exclusive yarns and colorways in their webstore, the Lorna’s Laces shepherd worsted weight yarn in “Newsprint”). Other speckled yarns would look great.

Needles: US size 7 / 4.5 mm (32” / 80 cm long) circular needles.

Gauge: Gauge is not crucial to this pattern, but it will affect yarn usage and how aggressively you may want to block your shawl, so I recommend knitting a gauge swatch: 16 sts / 20 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in stockinette.
