Chemo Laundry Backpack
Difficulty: Easy - Intermediate
Hook: I-9 (5.5 mm)
Yarn: worsted weight cotton yarn
Size: 24” x 11”
This isn’t just another cute backpack, although you can use it as such. No, this is a chemo laundry backpack for children with cancer. When cancer patients are receiving chemo, their bodily fluids can cause burns because the drugs are so strong. Any clothing or bedding that gets wet must be stored and washed separately from other clothing.
The chemo laundry bag makes that process easier. Made of 100% cotton, it absorbs fluids instead of leaking them. It’s also machine washable, so once it’s emptied into the washer, it can also be thrown in.
This backpack is worked in the round from the bottom up. It is worked primarily in sc so it won’t leak. However, texture and interest is created through the extended drop single crochet, a stitch for which I provide an extensive photo tutorial. I also include reference photos and tutorials for working in the third loop and for the invisible join, both techniques used in this crochet backpack pattern. Simple chains form the drawstring straps for this backpack, making it easy to open, close, and carry.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so I’m designing all of my patterns this month in yellow. The proceeds from sales of ANY Sunshine Charlotte pattern designed in yellow will also be donated toward pediatric cancer research. Check out a new pattern and make a difference this month by purchasing this pattern!
