Cherries and Vines
Bing! A cheery cherry pattern! I started with Barbara G. Walker’s “Medallion with Cherries” from her book A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, p.141. My version is a narrow afghan strip with top and bottom sections. See Barbara’s book if you’d like to see a magnificent allover pattern.
My strip starts with 23 stitches and has a 28-row repeat. The 12-row top and bottom sections are optional. The undulating 2-stitch vines are made by increasing on one side of the vines and decreasing on the other BUT this doesn’t happen on every right-side row, so be sure to check each row for variations. The vines are knitted through the back loop on the right side as are the stems. The cherries are made by making 5 stitches out of 1 stitch.
I recommend pointier needles due to the “make 5 stitches out of 1” and the M1-purl. I also recommend this pattern for intermediate knitters.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, M1-purl (see note), make 5 stitches out of 1 stitch, YO, k2tog, p2tog, p3tog, SSK, k1 tbl, k2 tbl, SK2P and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
37 yards of Lion Brand Wool Ease Recycled will make 10 inches of a 23-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
5 stitches/inch and 6.5 rows/inch in stockinette stitch – blocked
