There are two variations, with one of them having the lower pieces upside down.

The technique is mosaic crochet overlay, where the colors alternate each row. You can hide the ends with a double border. You will be working on the same side of each row, so the front of the blanket is always facing you.

You will need two contrasting colors of yarn, approximately 2000 yards of each color.
