I love colour, I really do. I love how it can put a smile on your face, invigorate your energy or calm your soul. I love how different colours play together - how they compliment, blend and clash. But I have to admit to being a little scared of it… scared of wearing it, anyway. (I sense it might be because my school experience taught me that visibility equals vulnerability.) Fortunately, I think I’ve found the perfect solution in bright, fun handknit socks. Each Chester sock, for example, features up to FIVE contrast colours in addition to the main colour. That’s up to 12 different colours per pair. Just think of all the possibilities!

The pattern is written for working toe-up. You will be working mostly stockinette stitch in the round, including a section of intarsia to create the contrast colour sole. There’s no need to panic if you’re new to working intarsia in the round though, because full detailed instructions for this technique are included. The pattern also includes step-by-step instructions on how to work a German short row heel along the way but this can easily be substituted for an alternative heel, if you would prefer.
