Beautiful gaiter or cowl knitting pattern for merino wool, alpaca, cashmere, acrylic or other soft yarn.

This knitting pattern is actually 3 patterns in one! Unblocked, the chevron design makes a snug and stretchy gaiter (close to neck). When blocked, the fabric becomes drapey and light for a looser cowl. Plus, I’ve added bonus directions to whip up a little headband with the extra yarn.

If you’re familiar with following a chart, this project is easy and fun for intermediate knitters.

The suggested 100% merino yarn makes this a one-skein project with enough yarn for both the cowl and headband.

Skill level: intermediate

Materials:
359 yards (174 m) of sportweight yarn*
Size US 5 - 16” circular needles (3.75 mm x 41 cm)

Cowl finished, blocked measurements: 27” (69 cm) circumference x 10.25” (26 cm) tall
Gaiter finished, unblocked measurements: 18” (46 cm) circ x 12” (30 cm) tall
Headband finished, unblocked measurements: 16” (41 cm) circ x 3.5” (9 cm) tall

Total yardage includes one cowl and one headband. Cowl alone requires 295 yards (270 m) of sportweight yarn.
