There is a beautiful story behind this pattern, well, everything starts with a beautiful story. No, I won’t bother you with details, I will just say that the yarn found its way to my stash by means of my good friend, Matina, who decided to gift it to me on my birthday last year.
We had both admired the beautiful, gradient colorways that Sara Sol had dyed and, as usual, we couldn’t make up our mind which pair of yarn cakes was our favorite. Well, that’s the beauty of these yarn cakes; it doesn’t matter which one you will choose, you are not going to regret it.
Why is this shawl named “chiaroscuro”? Because it plays with light and color and I made sure this game be evident. That’s why I used the gradient yarn as follows: I made several balls by breaking the yarn on every color change. This way, I had the opportunity to create bands of two-color color stripes and large bands of lace alternating separate colors, as well. Another (much easier) way to do this is by working with a main color, regular skein and mini skeins in several colors and experiment even further. It’s interesting and it adds a surprise element to your project.
This is an easy-to-memorize pattern, the kind of those you like when on vacation for your carefree summer knitting. Its shape is asymmetric and you get to choose the size you prefer as I have included instructions that will help you knit the shawl that works for you. Mine is large and lacey, just as I like them to be, yours can be smaller or larger, you are the boss here.
