Chicory Square
A quick and versatile join-as-you-go block, Chicory Square can be used for a variety of projects depending on the yarn used: blankets, pillows, bags, wraps, scarves, borders, table runners, or doilies.
Use any yarn you like, in any weight, with an appropriate size hook. Work all 5 rounds for a hint of granny, or join blocks at Round 3 for a lacy effect. (Bag pictured at left shows both techniques.) Rounds 4 and 5 make a wonderful border for the joined blocks and can be repeated as often as you like.
Chicory Square offers great scope for colourwork (it would make a wonderful stashbuster). For monochrome elegance, make the entire block in a single colour.
Free pattern includes instructions for assembling Chicory Square into a bag with scalloped border, straps, and tie closure.
Yarns I used: for bag, both hand-dyed and purchased worsted weight kitchen cotton yarn; for small squares, Planet Penny Cotton Club Dk weight.
The free, fully charted pattern (with helpful photos) can be found on my blog - see link below.
