This stitch pattern is from ca. 1888 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.12. Weldon used it for a child’s gaiters. It’s a wonderfully simple pattern: 3 rows of stockinette and 1 row of p2, k1! Add selvages, if needed. This easy pattern knits up fast!

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

50 yards of Mary Maxim’s Natural Alpaca yarn will make 10 inches of a 26-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
