Child's Sweater
UPDATE: Knit for Kids moved to World Vision a few years ago. Here’s the link to my pattern -

I created this pattern for Guidepost Magazine’s Knit for Kids Charity. They have a great crochet pattern that you can use to make sweaters that are sent to children around the world. But I decided to see if I could try to create a sweater that looked like the knitted sweater.
I have to admit that it’s the first time I ever graded a pattern, so my advice would be to check your measurements as you work against the pattern schematic to make sure you’re getting the right dimensions for the size you choose to crochet.
(Note: The Guidepost crochet sweater has a slightly wider neck than the knitted sweater, probably because crochet doesn’t stretch as much. You may want to use that pattern’s schematic to get the correct dimensions for the size you’ve chosen.)
It’s fairly easy to make, using only single and half-double crochet. I was inspired by Judith Copeland’s Modular Crochet to crochet the body vertically to mimic “stockinette” stitch.
If you decide to participate in the Knit For Kids program, you certainly don’t have to use this pattern in place of the Guidepost crochet pattern, which I think is adorable. My goal was simply to see if I could convert the knitted sweater to crochet, keeping the “look” as close as possible to the knitted version.
I’d appreciate very much hearing about your experience crocheting this sweater. Send your comments to my Ravelry Id: HawaiiHooker.
Happy Crocheting!
