Choice Bit of Calico (noun) a desirable woman slang
as in “That lady in the handknit shawl is a choice bit of calico, for sure.”

I often wonder if I was born in the wrong decade. I watch Phryne Fisher and Downton Abbey and lust over the clothes the women wear. Choice Bit of Calico was inspired by the fashion of the 1920s with swinging hems and embellished, sparkling clothes. The beads and the slightly ruffled border make an accessory that will gussy up any outfit.

This crescent-shaped shawlette is worked from the top down throughout the body. The applied border is then knit on sideways in easy short rows (no wraps!) to create a ruffled, beaded, sawtooth edge. Choose from a garter stitch or stockinette body, and knit with or without beads (but beads sure do add some class).

The size is easily customized by weighing your skein, as each repeat of the border requires approximately one gram of yarn.

The sample used one skein (430 yards) of One Twisted Tree Lustrous and approximately 500 6/0 glass seed beads.
