Choose Your Own Hat: a Mystery Adventure KAL

Square or round? Short or tall? You’re in the driver’s seat with this fun KAL. Inspired by the patterns in the newly released Hat Couture, this KAL will allow you to create a custom knit piece of millinery artwork. At each step you will be given a choice of two different design elements. Pick the path that best suits your tastes or your whims. The end result will be a beautifully structured knit hat ready for embellishment. Prizes will be awarded for the best hat overall, the most flamboyant hat, the best shaped hat, and the most wonderfully embellished hat. Advanced Beginner. Participants will be expected to know how to knit, purl, knit in the round, and work M1 increases, and k2tog and ssk decreases.

Things you should know:
You will be knitting a structured hat at a tight gauge. You will need to pick a yarn with a lot of body. Ideally you’re looking for something a bit sticky and on the rustic side. Soft drapey yarns won’t work. Cascade’s soft spun works well as does Brown Sheep’s lamb’s pride. Find a worsted weight yarn that you can knit at 20 sts = 4 inches in stockinette to produce a dense stiff fabric. You will likely need to go down a couple of needle sizes from what is suggested on the ball band.
