Christmas Elves
Knitted, felted Christmas Elves, the pattern is 13 pages long, I have included color photos, and written instructions. I designed the pattern so that there is as little sewing as possible, but you will need to know how to do a mattress/blind stitch, this is used after the Elf has been felted at the mouth, on the bottom of the Elf, and attaching the hat to the head. You should also be comfortable with the felting process.
Size will depend on how Elf felts-
In Stockinette stitch- on size 9 ( 5.50 mm) needles at 18 stitches by 24 rows - 4 inch square, about 8 inches in length. 10 1/2 (6.5 mm)16 stitches by 20 rows- 4 inch square, about 10 inches length.
Materials
Knitting needle 10 1/2,6.5 mm or 9, 5.50 mm, double points
Place markers that you can open or safety pins.
Stitch holder, or extra yarn for holding stitches.
Strong sewing thread that matches yarn color of hat, body suit, and skin tone.
Sewing needle
Blunt needle
wool fiber or polyester fiber fill- I suggest wool if you are planning on additional needle felting, or mohair locks for hair.
Wool or acrylic felt for vest, a 9” x 12” piece will make two vests, in color of choice.
Crochet hook size I
2 plastic animal noses size (12 mm)-I use these because of the Elfish almond shape, or round plastic safety eyes.
Yarn-Cascade 220, worsted weight 100% wool, (not superwash)
In one of the following skin tones
For a very light skin tone Col. No 8021-Beige
For a light skin tone Col. No 9499-Sand
For a medium skin tone Col. 1208-Tan
At least 1 other color for body and hat, and 1 for the hair, I have listed the colors I used but choose whatever you want. If you have one body color, one hair color, and skin tone you should be able to make 3 Elves.
Red Col. No. 2413 was used for the red Elf.
Green Col. No 2445
Black Col. No 8555 was used for the Coal mining Elf.
Hair color of choice
(optional items)
12” piece of ribbon.
Blush or Beeswax crayon-this will give a rosy appearance to cheeks, apply to rag or cloth then apply to face, so as not to over do the color.
Needle for needle felting- I use a 38 gauge; needle felting sponge, you do not have to have these to complete your Elf, through additional needle felting on face can add personality, especially around the eyes, nose, and mouth, and if you want mohair locks for hair.
Jingle bell for hat
Mohair or hair
Buttons, bracelet fastenings, recycled purse fastenings, etc.- you can just leave the vest opened.
