The amount of yarn needed varies greatly depending on the size of the hat you are making
The beanie is made using a J hook, but you may need to substitute with an I or K hook to obtain the correct gauge (depending on the brand of yarn and how tightly / loosely you crochet).
If you are planning to make the snowflake applique, you will need #4 / medium / worsted weight yarn and an F / G / H hook (depending on how large you would like the snowflake).
