Any colours could be used - you need some dark and some light, and cycle round every combination of dark and light (if in doubt think of every school uniform you’ve ever known!)

The sequence I used was:
red with white
orange with green
yellow with blue
brown with white
red with orange
green with yellow
blue with white
orange with brown
red with yellow
white with green
orange with blue
brown with yellow
red with white
