This Christmas stocking is knitted in pure wool and lightly felted afterwards. I used Peer Gynt from Sandnes Garn in the prototypes, but any yarn in pure wool with a yardage of 50 g = 90-110 m can be used.

Main color: 2 x 50 g
Contrasting color: 1 x 50g

The techniques in use are as follows:

Judy’s Magic Cast on - closed double cast on
Stockinette using Magic Loop
Knit & purl
Increase left & right
Stranded knitting using two colors with floats
Invisible colorchange
Short rows - German short rows
Regular bind off
Reversed loop cast on
Knit together an edge and do the bind off at the same time
Double knitting
Sew together the stitches on the needle with the cast on insted of a regular bind off.
Embroider duplicate stitches
Felting

The pattern include charts for the colorwork, smaller letters and bigger letters. The letters are optional to use. If you’d prefer a single color stocking you need one more skein in the main color instead of one in contrasting color, and knit the parts using the chart in one thread and one color.

Felting varies from machine to machine. If you never done it before it can be very nerve wrecking. I don’t think it can be a total failure if you use a regular temperature and a shorter washing cycle. It is the beating between the knitted garmet and another piece of clothing and the temperature that creates the felting. The felting is done to give the stocking some more firmness and make the colorwork blend better.
