Chunkigan Coatigan
Do you love a chunky and colourful knit? Mosaic knitting, sometimes called slip stitch knitting, is truly the easiest form of colorwork.
Mosaic knitting is a great way of knitting without learning a new and complicated technique. It is a method of colorwork that involves two simple techniques- slipping stitches and changing main and contrasting colour between rows.
No matter the season, there is no denying the fact that snuggling in a chunky cardigan makes you feel like in paradise.
So, if you are looking for your next DIY project - the Chunkigan Coatigan is exactly what you need. It is hand knitted using 15mm size needle sideways, using a pattern that starts by knitting a sleeve and ending with the other one. The best thing- you can wear it both sides!
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.
NB The Cardigan pattern is in 3 lengths. It is photographed in the Mid length option. Pattern is written for mid length cardigan with changes to shorter and longer length in parentheses.
Useful tip: To follow pattern, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
• 13 x 50g balls (975m or 1066yds) using Drops Nepal mix 8905 colour shade. NB If you substitute another yarn, please check gauge (tension) and yardage.
• 4 x 150g balls (200m or 220yds) using Sirdar Bohemia yarn. Colour 0702.
• 1 Circular needle 15.00mm x length 100cm (US 19).
• 1 Tapestry needle.
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING:
Due to the weight of the yarn and the fact that you are working mainly in garter st, sleeve and cardigan length extend 5-7cm after washing and blocking.
One size: M (the knitted fabric is stretchy).
Length: mid, (short, long).
Cardigan length (from top of the shoulders) - 85cm/33.46ins, (60cm/23.62ins; 110cm/43.31ins).
Cardigan flat width (just below armhole) - 54cm/21.26ins.
Total sleeve length (unrolled from top of shoulders) - 73cm/28.74ins, (63cm/24.80ins; 83cm/32.68ins).
Sleeve flat width (just below armhole) - 20cm (7.87ins).
GAUGE (Tension): 7,5sts and 12rows = 10 cm (4ins), before blocking measured over Mosaic st, knitted sideways, using 15.0mm (US19) needle.
7sts and 14 rows = 10cm (4ins), garment being blocked and measured over mosaic st, knitted sideways, using 15.0mm (US 19) needle.
NB Needle size is only a guide- if you get too many stitches for 10cm, take a larger needle size. If you get too few stitches for 10cm, take a smaller needle size. It’s very important to check your gauge (tension) before starting as working to the wrong tension will mean your garment won’t be size shown.
