The issue with many fingerless gloves is that many styles are very feminine. I wanted a no-nonsense practical glove one that is hard wearing and that my burly Australian model (who happens to be my fiancé) would not hesitate to wear. At the minute he is struggling to get used to our Irish winters, a tad different from winter on the Gold Coast of Australia!

These fingerless gloves were born of necessity (I was tired listening of how cold Jay’s hands were) but when he wore ordinary gloves he moaned, the fingers were not practical, he had to take them off to use his phone or do any outside work, requiring a little dexterity. In addition, as he has large hands, he found that he got cold wrists, that pesky gap between the bottom of the glove and the cuff of his jumper/jacket. These fingerless gloves eliminate that as they have an extended cuff turning the gloves into a marriage between an arm warmer and glove. The arm warmer section extends for several inches so that it can’t slip or work its way out from under your sleeve. In addition, as these gloves are made from chunky pure wool, they are wrist protectors so if you’re going to use your gloves whilst working, they give your wrist a little added protection. It must be said however that these gloves cannot be used instead of proper protective clothing but if knit in the heavy chunky yarn recommended, they do offer extra support to the wrist and some protection.

These are a really easy and fast crochet; beginners will have no problem with them and will add a new stitch to their repertoire and those more experienced will whip them up in no time.

In this pattern I’m going to tell you how to custom size these for your own version of a burly Australian or even for yourself or your kids. These fingerless gloves are just too good to allow them to be monopolised by cold Australians in Ireland and the UK.

Size shown – Large - to fit 22/23 cm around palm of hand but instructions will be given at each stage for custom sizing with photos to demonstrate where the important measurements are.
