Chunky Knit Vest
This Quick knit, chunky vest pattern is a very quick and easy knit using up any of your chunky weight stash yarn or thick and fluffly yarns plied together.
It is a fun project.
You have your stash because you have loved it at one time or another and if you have collected lots of unused yarn, now is the time to have a go and use some of it up to make something you will love to wear and enjoy seeing all your yarns in one garment.
I used a lot of yarn that I have had for 10 years –I didn’t even remember what one or two yarns were and a couple are discontinued
Gauge
The gauge of my vest is 12 rows and 7:5 stitches to 10cm.
Needles
12mm UK (80cm) circular needle
12mm regular needles for when you split the knitting at the arm pit.
This project is knitted bottom up, in the round until the armpit where you split the knitting for the front and back and knit in easy stockinette stitch.
It is a very quick knit because of the thickness of your plied yarn and you will cast on with only 70 stitches - can you imagine how quick that will be?
Size. The size of my vest is :- 20 inches across front when flat – but will easily stretch to 22 inches
You will have to do a swatch to get the right amount of plied yarns to reach the gauge but this has been achieved by me and 3 test knitters.
For an example - Some brands of the yarns that I used are :-
1 strand of Lopi Lettlopi + 4 strands of mohair,
1 Strand of Big Wool – Rowan, 1 Strand of Shetland Aran yarn with 2 strands of something I don’t recognise, 1 strand of extra chunky, Katia – Big Merino Virgin wool bulky, 2 strands of Lopi
Lettlopi, 2 strands of Noro twisted, 1 strand of Malabrigo Extra Chunky pure wool, two strands of some fluffy variegated from a charity shop twisted with 2 strands of mohair and the latest yarn I am using is my favourite – it is soft hand dyed beautiful green pure wool by Red Squirrel and Dune and the only acrylic that I have ever bought is a ball of Cottage spun by King Cole plus I bought the most exquisite pale green mohair from Luca_S The last two examples are the only yarn that I have bought
in the last 10 years
The pattern has photographs of how the cast off stitches around the neck looks, as well as written instructions on how to do the decreases and there is a full chart with shows all measurments, how many rows for each section and calculations for gauge.
I very much enjoyed making this vest. It took me 3 days - so you can make it quickly for yourself or for a friend.
