This pattern is available for free.

This chunky OTTO hat is knitted in the round, bottom-up, in half-twisted rib. The inside of the finished beanie will have a 1x1 ribbing pattern, while the outside is a twisted 1x1 rib. Using this half-twisted rib, you will get a very chunky result, without the hat being too stiff.
Use an italian cast on to get a neat finishing of the fold edge. This cast on method mimics a 1x1 ribbing and will give a professional look to your knit.

Measurements: XS (51-53cm), S (54-56cm), M (57-59cm), L (60-62cm)
The size is indicated in the pattern as follows: XS(S)M(L)

Materials:
-Approx. 150-180g Chunky yarn, depending on your style of knitting (type 50g=50m)
-7mm double pointed needles or circular needles (or the corresponding size to get the correct gauge)
-Darning needle

Gauge: 17 stitches x 18 rows knit in half-twisted rib will make a 10x10cm gauge

Stitches:
Half-twisted rib pattern A (twist the knits): in a 1x1 ribbing, knit all the knit stitches trough the back loop, the purl stitches are worked in the standard manner.
Half-twisted rib pattern B (twist the purls): in a 1x1 ribbing, knit all the knit stitches in the standard manner, the purl stitches are knit trough the back loop.

Let’s knit!

Fold
Cast on 80(82)86(92) stitches using the italian tubular cast on method. Place a stitch marker to indicate the start of the row.
Start with half-twisted rib pattern B and repeat until your piece measures 8cm.

Body
Continue in half-twisted rib pattern A and knit up to a height of 20(20)21(24)cm (including the fold). I recommend you to try on the hat now. There is about 10cm left to knit.

Crown
Devide the stitches in 9 almost-equal parts. Place stitch markers.
9(9)10(10)st, sm, 9(9)9(10)st, sm, 9(9)10(11)st, sm, 9(9)9(10)st, sm, 9(9)10(10)st, sm, 9(9)9(10)st, sm, 9(9)10(11)st, sm, 9(9)9(10)st, sm, 8(10)10(10)st
r1: knit in half-twisted rib pattern A untill you reach the 2 last stitches before the first stich marker, knit these last 2 stitches together trough the back loop. Repeat this for the 8 following sections, untill you reach the beginning of the round stitch marker.
r2: knit all stitches in half-twisted rib pattern A untill you reach the beginning of the round stitch marker.
Repeat (r1, r2) untill you have 17(9)14(11) stitches remaining in total.
Cut off the yarn, leaving a long tail. Using a darning needle, pull this tail trough the remaining stitches to close the hat.

Weave in your ends.
