Cindy's Toes
Cindy’s Toes is a sock toe pattern. It will work in any yarn and gauge that you choose to make into a sock. It can also be used for mittens.
Cindy was a participant in Knit for Life. A cancer patient. She lost her fight.
Her family donated her knitting materials including several unfinished projects to Knit for Life to continue helping cancer patients and their caregivers. I do not know the entire chain of events but eventually they came to my Knit for Life group and to me. I was a caregiver until my father also lost his fight. I still participate with Knit for Life.
Cindy’s socks came to me with one sock ready to close the toe and the second worked to just past the heel. I used the first sock as a pattern to knit the second sock foot to match the first. I ran into trouble at the toe.
Cindy’s sock had a unique pattern on the toe. One that I had never seen before. I have been sock knitting for around 30 years. This toe baffled me. I went through all of my books, some of which came from my grandmother. I spent the spring and summer of 2018 taking the completed sock with me everywhere, to all the local yarn stores, running it by knitters more experienced than myself. I searched online and found nothing similar. No one had ever seen a toe like Cindy’s.
Most suggested I just undo the toe and re-knit it with a standard toe pattern. One shop owner stated the obvious: ‘She kept her patterns in her head.’ I was not thinking good thoughts as I left her shop that day. I really wanted to finish the socks as Cindy had intended.
Being out time, of out of options, and with much trepidation, I carefully undid the completed sock, stitch by stitch, row by row. Writing down the stitches as I went. I then reversed my notes and finished the second sock successfully! Yippee!!! I went back and re-knitted the first toe.
Here are my notes for you to make your own Cindy’s Toes. I have made the directions free but donations to Knit For Life are welcome.
