About this design
Ciottolo means “pebble” or “cobblestone” in Italian, and that’s just what this simple slipstitch design looks like to me … tiny little pebbles of colour popping out from a solid colour background. Whether you choose the two- or the three-colour version, this scarf has a lovely tweedy feel about it, which is further emphasised by the smooth i-cord borders that fully enclose the scarf. I just love this little knitterly detail that makes this hand-knitted accessory extra special.

The Ciottolo Scarf also provides a lovely platform for playing with colour. The three-colour option works just as well with three colours of similar contrast as it does where the main colour is noticeably darker or lighter than the two contrast colours. The three-colour sample shown in the pattern has used colours of very similar contrast, which means they blend together to give a very subtle stripe effect. The two-colour version also works well with two strongly contrasting colours or two similar contrast colours, but in my view it really shows its true beauty with a long colour gradient yarn. The two-colour sample demonstrates using a long colour gradient and is even more special because the long colour gradient for the contrast colour has been created with a Magic Ball. An added bonus is that the wrong side of the slip stitch pattern is just as lovely as the right side, which makes this scarf fully reversible.

Size
Adult Scarf – finished dimensions are 20 cm wide x 152.5 cm long/8 ins wide x 60 ins long.

Tension
22 st x 40 rows over 10 cm/4 inches in the slipped stitch pattern knitted flat using 5.00 mm (US size 8, UK size 6) needles. A close match for tension is not essential for this pattern but you should aim for something close to ensure that your scarf has a soft drape. Please move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match. You may use more or less yarn if your tension is different.

Two-colour Option
Two colours of any 8 ply/double knit yarn that knits to match the required tension gauge as follows:

Main Colour: 250 metres 274 yards Approx 125 g
Contrast Colour 1: 190 metres 208 yards Approx 100 g

Three-colour Option
Three colours of any 8 ply/double knit yarn that knits to match the required tension gauge as follows:

Main Colour: 250 metres 274 yards Approx 125 g
Contrast Colour 1: 95 metres 104 yards Approx 50 g
Contrast Colour 2: 95 metres 104 yards Approx 50 g

Needles
5.00 mm (US size 8, UK size 6) needles.
One double-pointed needle – size is not important – or a cable needle.

Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.
Stitch marker.
