This pattern is a CHART ONLY….but don’t be afraid!
With your knowledge of Double-knitting, and two colors of yarn, you can cast on and work this cute baby blanket in one piece!
The checkerboard effect comes from switching your base colors appropriately as you work across. There is a purl stitch at each edge and between each motif. This makes a nice frame around each motif.
Since you are working back and forth in straight rows, and changing the base colors according to the square, the chart reading may be a bit of a challenge, but don’t give up! The results are worth the effort.
This blanket was 4 squares across by 3 squares up. It’s finished measurements are approx 48” x 48”.
I used a soft acrylic yarn In a worsted weight because this was a gift to a baby and the blanket needed to be washable and dryable.
Each motif is 28 sts wide. If you are making a blanket like the one I did, (4 motifs wide) then cast on 117 sts; 112 for the motifs, and 5 sts for the purl between the motifs and at each edge.
Knit the first two rows after your cast-on, using both yarns held together.
On the third row, purl the first stitch with both yarns held together, then :separate your colors (light color to front) for the next 28 sts.
Purl the next stitch with both yarns held together, then separate your colors again (dark color to front) for the next 28 sts:
.
Purl next stitch with both yarns held together, then rep from : to :
Purl last stitch with both yarns held together.
Turn, purl first stitch with both yarns, then work in appropriate colors across, purling the single stitches between the squares with both yarns held together.
Work according to chart for each square.
The third photo shows a blanket made by Ravelry user BOadicea. The body of the blanket was made with the Circle-O pattern. The squids are made using my FREE pattern download of Sid the Squid. Too cute!
