The Cirsium Cowl is knitted in the round using a two-colour stranded technique, creating a cosy, bouncy texture with a traditional corrugated rib and a bold geometric motif. This pattern is written in two versions, and each version has two sizes. The short, snuggly neck warmer version gives a splash of style, the taller, wider version makes a bigger statement cowl. The stitch pattern is inspired by an historic engraving of a Thistle stalk viewed under a microscope by the pioneering botanist Nehemiah Grew. In the late 1600s he was one of the first people to record and study the deceptively simple, rhythmic and organised beauty of plant cells. The design aims to reflect those qualities and evoke the thistle flower and the almost crystalline structures that he saw.
